Dame Janet Burgess

Janet is a native San Diegan who had a long career in law enforcement before becoming a cooking instructor. She graduated from San Diego State University and was one of the first women hired and trained for patrol duties with the San Diego Police Department.

Janet finished culinary school in 1998 and also attended cooking school in Italy as well as the Culinary Institute of America. She then opened up her cooking school, 4Littlecooks, specializing in classes for children. She also taught kids cooking classes for many years at the Macy’s School of Cooking, where she developed the Junior Iron Chef Competition series. Her cookbook for children, CHOP, COOK, MUNCH, was published in 2012. A portion of her book sales is donated to the garden project at her alma mater, McKinley Elementary.

In addition to teaching, she also does food styling for clients. Her recipes, food and table settings have appeared on ABC, NBC, CBS, KUSI, Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union Tribune.

Janet is a founding member, past president and current president of Les Dames d’Escoffier International, San Diego Chapter.
